How to remove a bad smell

How to get rid of a bad smell in 4 easy steps.

The 4 steps to removing a bad smell.

Step 1 - Identify
Step 2 - Ventilate
Step 3 - Remove & Clean
Step 4 - Maintain

1. Identify.

Identify the source of the smell.

This is the first step to getting rid of it. Once you know where the smell is coming from, you can take steps to address it.

2. Ventilate.

Ventilate the area.

Opening windows and doors can help to remove stale air and circulating fresh air can help to dilute the smell. You can also use air conditioning that takes in fresh air from outside or fans to help air circulation.

Bio Hygiene Odour Neutraliser is great to use at this stage to neutralise the smell if you can't immediately remove it.

3. Remove & Clean.

Completely remove the source of the smell.

  1. - If the smell is coming from something that can be thrown away, such as a dead animal or trash, get it out of the room as soon as possible.

  2. - For washroom smells, use BioForce3 Washroom Cleaner on floors, urnials, toilets (paying close attention to the underside of the toilet seat) and sinks. Because of its fragranced synbiotic cleaner, it will imediately start freshening the smell, but as the synbiotic begins to work, it keeps cleaning until there is no more bad bacteria or dirt left for it to feed on (aka, it's totally clean and odour free).

  3. - If the smell source looks like it could be lifted with a hoover, use the Numatic WBV370NX battery wet & dry vacuum

  4. - Dirt in deep cracks (like grout lines) can be a cause for smells. Use a heavy duty cleaner like Formula 80, or for a more sustainable approach, Oleonix.

  5. - For hard floors, use a MotorScrubber Shock for the corners and Numatic 244NX scrubber dryer for the rest of the floor.

  6. - Blocked drains can also be a source of smelly washrooms. Use Formula 50 to unblock them.

  7. - Kitchen smells can also come from dirty ovens or fridges. For ovens, use Formula 5 or Formula 50 for ovens. For smelly fridges you'll need a food-safe, sanitising and degreasing chemical like K1 or Eco-Dose E5.

  8. - For carpets/upholstery, use a carpet cleaning machine with a hand tool, like the Carpex 30:300. Depending on what is causing the smell, you might want to use a sprayable carpet cleaning solution like the BioForce3 Floor Scrub, Bio Hygiene Odour Neutraliser, Prochem Urine Neutraliser.

  9. - For removing milk from carpet or upholstery, spray Clensan and leave for 15-20mins, follow with Stain Pro, mix the Fibre & Fabric Rinse with the Fresh Breeze Odour Neutraliser and use in a carpet extraction machine to extract the stain (and smell), leave for a day and follow up with a spray of Clensan if the smell is still present.

4. Maintain.

Keep the air fresh.

  1. - Cleaning washrooms and other areas with synbiotic cleaners helps to reduce the amount of odour-creating dirt and germ build-up. BioForce3 Washroom cleaner, Multipurpose cleaner, Floor Scrub and Toilet Descaling Gel are great for preventing bad smells from forming.

  2. Probiotic air fresheners can be programmed to automatically spray to a set schedule, freshening the air and maintaining floor cleanliness as the probiotics spread and dominate the floor surfaces (tip: make sure it's comfortably above eye height to avoid injury).

  3. - Alternatively, you can use air filtering systems with perfume scents to clean and replace minor/musty smells.

  4. - In washrooms, you can use urinal screens like Ekcoscreen or an automatic toilet and urinal cleaner such as Tubeless Autoclean or a toilet rim fragrance clip like Ekcoclip.
